The Kondalilla, Mapleton and Mapleton Falls National Parks are located in the Blackall Range of southeast Queensland. They are part of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and the Sunshine Coast UNESCO Biosphere, a region known for its lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and stunning views.
History:
Kondilla and Mapleton National Parks were established in 1991 to protect the unique ecosystems and natural beauty of the Blackall Range. The area has a long history of Aboriginal occupation. European settlement began in the 19th century, and the area was cleared for agriculture and timber. However, in recent decades, there has been a growing recognition of the importance of conserving the region’s natural heritage, and both parks have played a crucial role in protecting the Blackall Range’s biodiversity.
Kondalilla National Park is known for its waterfalls, including Kondalilla Falls, which is a popular swimming spot. The park also features lush rainforest, walking trails, and picnic areas. Mapleton National Park is home to the Mapleton Falls, which is a scenic waterfall surrounded by subtropical rainforest. The park also offers hiking trails, camping grounds, and birdwatching opportunities.
Key features of the parks include:
- Rainforests: Both parks are home to diverse rainforest ecosystems, including subtropical, temperate, and montane rainforests. These forests support a wide range of plant and animal species, including many that are rare or endangered.
- Waterfalls: The parks are known for their beautiful waterfalls, which are formed by the flow of water through the rainforest. These waterfalls provide habitat for aquatic plants and animals, and they are also popular with visitors.
- Walking trails: Both parks offer a variety of walking trails that range from easy to challenging. These trails allow visitors to explore the rainforest, discover hidden waterfalls, and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
- Wildlife: The parks are home to a diverse range of wildlife, including birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Visitors may encounter kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, and a variety of bird species, including the iconic lyrebird.
- Kondalilla and Mapleton National Parks are popular destinations for nature lovers, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts. They offer a unique opportunity to experience the beauty and diversity of the Blackall Range and to learn about the region’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
Great Walk
The Great Walk is a 59-kilometre (36.5-mile) hiking trail that passes through both Kondalilla and Mapleton National Parks. It is considered one of the most challenging walks in Queensland, but it offers stunning views of the Blackall Range and its surrounding landscape.
The walk begins at Kondalilla Falls and follows the river upstream through lush rainforest. It then climbs to the ridge of the Blackall Range, where it offers panoramic views of the Sunshine Coast and the Pacific Ocean. The trail then descends to Baxter Creek Falls, a picturesque waterfall that is a popular swimming spot. From Baxter Creek Falls, the trail continues through Mapleton National Park and returns to Kondalilla Falls.
The Great Walk is a challenging but rewarding hike. It requires a good level of fitness and experience, as well as appropriate hiking equipment. However, the effort is rewarded with stunning scenery, unique wildlife encounters, and a sense of accomplishment.
